A New Era of College Football

College football didn’t die in 2020.

It began to fracture.

The COVID-19 shutdown exposed problems that had been building for years. When the sport returned, conference realignment accelerated, television agreements became more fragmented, NIL disputes intensified, operating costs climbed, and the traditional structure of college football became increasingly difficult to hold together.

By the middle of the decade, the sport was still alive — but it no longer looked unified.

In 2026, a coalition of private investors, media partners, former coaches, and participating universities decided to build something different.

The result was the College Football Championship Series.

CFCS was created as an alternative national competition built outside the traditional conference model. Forty programs agreed to join the inaugural season under one centralized structure: balanced national scheduling, a single League Phase table, defined competitive standards, and a seeded postseason leading directly to the CFCS Championship.

Not every program signed on.

Some universities rejected the financial terms. Others wanted greater control over media rights, scheduling, or revenue. Several traditional powers ultimately chose to remain outside the new venture rather than accept the conditions required to join.

CFCS moved forward without them.

The result is not an attempt to replace college football.

It is a different version of it.

Old rivalries may survive. New rivalries will be created. Programs that rarely crossed paths will now compete for position in the same national table. Every game carries weight, every season reshapes the field, and every coach faces the same path to the championship.
