The College Football Championship Series brings 40 programs together in one national competition built around balanced scheduling, meaningful regular-season games and multiple postseason paths.
The 40-Team Field
The CFCS uses a compressed team pool designed to create competitive games across the league. The field is built primarily around Play Now teams rated between 80 and 86 OVR, with the final 40 programs selected from the approved league pool.
Keeping the range tighter gives every coach a realistic opportunity to compete while still preserving meaningful differences between teams.
There are no conferences or divisions. Every team competes in the same League Phase, and all 40 programs are ranked together based on their performance throughout the season.
The League Phase
Each team plays ten League Phase games against ten different opponents.
- Ten unique matchups
- Five home games and five away games
- No duplicate opponents
- Rivalry games where scheduling balance allows
- A comparable level of schedule difficulty across the league
Every League Phase game contributes to one unified national ranking.
Balanced Scheduling
The 40 teams are divided into five scheduling pots containing eight teams each.
Every program plays two opponents from each pot, creating a ten-game schedule with the same basic opponent-strength distribution for every coach.
The scheduling-pot system is designed to reduce schedule luck while still producing a wide variety of matchups across the league.
Season Timeline
The League Phase is played in three scheduling windows:

Completed during the final ten days
This format keeps the season moving while providing coaches with structured periods to complete their games.
The Championship Path
At the conclusion of the League Phase, the top 24 teams qualify for the CFCS Championship Tournament.
Rewarding the league’s strongest regular-season performances with a major postseason advantage.
Teams are paired by seed, beginning with Seed 9 against Seed 24 and continuing through Seed 16 against Seed 17.
The eight playoff winners join Seeds 1–8 in the Round of 16.

The Secondary Cup
Teams finishing 25th through 40th enter the Secondary Cup and receive a separate postseason opportunity.
The eight teams eliminated during the Knockout Phase Playoff then enter the second round of the Secondary Cup.
This structure keeps every team’s season meaningful while giving programs outside the championship field another trophy to pursue.
