Alabama rolls into Michigan State, and the first question is tempo
Alabama at Michigan State
Season 2, Week 4 brings Alabama to Michigan State . The Spartans just survived a 38–34 track meet with Houston; can they keep that pace if Alabama turns this into a possession-by-possession grind?
Alabama visits Michigan State in Season 2, Week 4, and it’s a styles question without needing a label: does this one turn into a sprint again, or does it slow down into a field-position, make-your-drives game?
Michigan State’s only on-field snapshot this season is a wild 38–34 win over Houston in Week 2, and the numbers scream “air show.” The Spartans piled up 395 passing yards but only 38 rushing yards, living through the quarterback and the perimeter game. That can be a thrilling way to play, but it also puts a spotlight on the little moments: they threw one interception in that win, and they were efficient enough on third down (3-of-8) to keep the machine moving when it mattered.
The other swing area is the red zone. Michigan State got six trips and cashed three touchdowns plus a field goal. That’s good production, but it also leaves a couple of possessions on the table—possessions that feel enormous if Alabama can make this a lower-scoring, fewer-drives kind of afternoon.
Both coaches bring proven Season 1 resumes—Alabama’s jared10227 went 11–3, Michigan State’s Doc went 11–4—so this isn’t about nerves. It’s about control. If Michigan State can dictate tempo with that passing game, the Spartans can pull defenders into space and keep the scoreboard hot. If Alabama can deny easy rhythm early, the whole game tilts into that one central tension: whose pace becomes the law?
