FOUR PICKS, ONE MISERABLE AFTERNOON: COWBOYS BLOW HOME OPENER DESPITE HAWKINS’ HEROICS

Home-field advantage was supposed to mean something in Stillwater. The crowd was ready, the Cowboys had a chance to make an early statement, and Caleb Hawkins was running like somebody had personally offended him. Unfortunately, football has a cruel sense of humor. Drew Mestemaker threw four interceptions, Oklahoma State let its home opener slip away, and Hawkins’ monster afternoon became the bright spot in a loss that will leave Cowboy fans wondering how much different the story might have been without those costly turnovers.

Mestemaker's four interceptions were the defining problem. In college football, giveaways are bad enough on the road; at home, in a game your team wants to control, they're an invitation for the opposition to seize momentum. Every interception put additional pressure on the Oklahoma State defense and made the offense's job harder. Instead of sustaining drives and letting the Cowboys dictate the pace, the offense repeatedly handed away opportunities. Mestemaker has the arm to make things happen, but this was a reminder that protecting the football matters just as much as making the spectacular throw. The opposing defense didn't need to be perfect—it needed to be opportunistic.

And here's the frustrating part: Caleb Hawkins was absolutely cooking. Hawkins powered his way to 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns, delivering the kind of performance that should have put Oklahoma State in position to compete deep into the fourth quarter. He brought explosive production to the ground game, gave the offense a reliable weapon, and made the most of his opportunities. When a running back clears 200 yards and scores twice, the expectation is that his team has a serious chance to win. Instead, Hawkins wound up carrying a heavy load while the turnovers kept dragging the Cowboys backward. That's a tough way to waste a career-defining kind of afternoon.

For Coach Giver, the home opener offers a blunt lesson in his first season at Oklahoma State: talent can keep you in a game, but discipline and ball security help you finish it. The coaching staff will have plenty to review, especially when it comes to protecting possessions and helping Mestemaker respond after a difficult outing. One rough game doesn't define a quarterback, but four interceptions cannot become a habit if the Cowboys want to compete consistently.

Hawkins gave Stillwater plenty to cheer about, but the final result delivered the opposite feeling. Oklahoma State had the home crowd, a 208-yard rushing performance, and two rushing touchdowns—and still couldn't get the job done.

Hawkins brought 208 yards of thunder, but four interceptions turned the Cowboys' homecoming into a football heartbreak.
