Gamecocks Survive California's Late Charge, Open CFCS Season With 34–27 Victory

South Carolina CFCS NEWS

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina opened Season 2 of the College Football Championship Series with a thrilling 34–27 victory over California, as Coach Sean's Gamecocks delivered a decisive late touchdown and survived one final Golden Bears rally that ended just four yards short of the end zone.

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers led a South Carolina offense that accumulated 474 total yards, including 375 through the air. Receiver Jayden Gibson contributed 133 receiving yards, while running back Matt Fuller led the Gamecocks with 42 rushing yards.

The contest was tied at 13 at halftime before developing into a second-half shootout. Neither team could establish lasting separation, with California answering South Carolina's scoring drives and eventually pulling even at 27.

With the game hanging in the balance, Sellers delivered the defining play.

Facing second-and-six near his own 44-yard line, Sellers used play-action to exploit a favorable matchup against a California linebacker. The resulting deep completion carried South Carolina inside the five-yard line, where the receiver deliberately went down to preserve possession and force California to expend a timeout.

The Gamecocks subsequently punched in the go-ahead touchdown, taking a 34–27 lead with just 25 seconds remaining.

California wasn't finished.

A pair of quick completions advanced the Golden Bears into striking distance before a final desperation heave threatened to turn the game upside down. The receiver made the catch, but South Carolina's defense delivered the most important tackle of the night, stopping him at the four-yard line as time expired.

The Gamecocks escaped with a seven-point victory and a valuable early-season lesson: explosive offense can create opportunities, but situational execution finishes games.

For South Carolina, the win offered evidence that its multiple-formation attack can sustain drives, create favorable matchups and produce in high-pressure moments. With Sellers distributing the football beyond his featured outside receivers, the Gamecocks demonstrated the offensive versatility that could define their CFCS campaign.

Final: South Carolina 34, California 27.
