Welcome to the Neal Kreuter era.

MINNEAPOLIS —
In a Week 1 CFCS thriller that had Huntington Bank Stadium shaking, the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-0) survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback by the Louisville Cardinals (0-1) to secure a 31-29 victory in Kreuter's highly anticipated Minnesota debut.
The win not only wipes the slate clean from Kreuter's difficult 4-8 stint at Illinois but announces the Gophers as a resilient force under their new leader.
"We made it harder on ourselves than we needed to, but that’s a Big Ten football team finding its grit," Kreuter said postgame, wearing a drenched Gophers visor and a headset still around his neck. "Our guys fought. When the storm came in the fourth, we didn't bend. We held."
The Game of Two Halves After a slow first quarter that saw Louisville take a 7-3 lead, the Gophers’ offense came alive in the second quarter. Driven by a physical ground game and the arm of quarterback Drake Lindsey, Minnesota put up 14 unanswered points to take a 17-10 halftime lead.
The ground attack, spearheaded by Darius Taylor, was relentless. Taylor rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries, including a crucial 1-yard touchdown that punctuated Minnesota's physical push on the line. Supplementing him was backfield partner A.J. Turner, who was hyper-efficient, rushing for 58 yards on just five carries.
Through the air, Lindsey (17-for-26, 198 yards, 3 TDs) targeted his playmakers early. Wide receiver Jalen Smith was the star of the aerial show, racking up 91 yards on four receptions and catching two pivotal touchdown passes. Tight end Kaden Helms also proved to be a reliable safety valve, securing 5 catches for 64 yards, while Javon Tracy added a third touchdown pass from Lindsey to keep the momentum rolling.
Lindsey's Interceptions Keep Louisville Alive Despite Minnesota’s 352 to 223 edge in total offense, the game remained a nail-biter due to self-inflicted mistakes. Lindsey’s highly productive day was marred by three costly interceptions. Louisville turned those turnovers into life, staying within striking distance.
Trailing 31-17 going into the final quarter, the Cardinals unleashed a frantic comeback, outscoring Minnesota 12-7 in the final frame. The Gophers struggled to close out the game, as Lindsey’s third turnover allowed Louisville to narrow the gap to 31-29.
The Defense Saves the Day With Louisville threatening to pull off a monumental comeback, Minnesota’s defense stepped up when it mattered most. The Gophers’ front seven played out of their minds, entirely neutralizing Louisville’s ground game to a measly 35 rushing yards.
The hero of the night was defensive end Anthony Smith, who put on one of the most dominant defensive performances in recent memory. Smith was an absolute wrecking crew, recording 11 total tackles, a whopping 7 tackles for loss (TFL), and 4.5 sacks. Beside him, safety Kerry Brown anchored the secondary, recording 8 tackles (and 8 TFL on the stat sheet) to help blunt Louisville’s late surges.
In the game’s final minutes, as Louisville fought for field-goal position, the Golden Gopher defense slammed the door, securing the 31-29 victory as the clock expired.
Up Next The Gophers (1-0) showed they have the offensive firepower and defensive grit to compete, but the three turnovers will be a major point of emphasis for Kreuter as they prepare for Week 2. For now, however, Minneapolis celebrates a triumphant, hard-fought start to a new era.
Louisville (0-1) will return home to lick its wounds after a valiant effort fell just yards short.
